After a year of hiatus, stars such as “Punishment” co-star Michael Cera, “Glee” star Nick Jonas, and “Saturday Night Live” alum Kate McKinnon took to the stages for a one-off performance in New Orleans on Friday.
Cera and Jonas were joined by McKinnon, who plays a therapist, to perform a set of “PUNISH” songs, including the cover of “Tear the World Up,” a song that has become synonymous with the show’s brand.
“I don’t really know why,” McKinnon said before the set started.
“I’ve never really been able to really say what I like or dislike about the show.
I just kind of want to get a feel for it, you know?
But I guess it’s fun.”
The singer said she enjoyed the show because it was “just about a show about making it and getting through it, and getting over it.”
She continued, “I think it’s just a really positive show, and you can tell that people are enjoying it, because it’s like a really fun show, but you know, it’s really challenging, and it’s a little bit challenging to play on the show and not get hurt.
It’s not a show you want to play, but it’s something you have to play.”
Jonas also said he found the show to be a little challenging, but he appreciated that he was allowed to have fun.
“It’s like you’re doing a show, so you don’t want to make mistakes, you want it to be fun,” he said.
“It’s not like, ‘Oh, we’re going to do a joke.’
It’s just, you can do whatever you want, you don’ need to be in a scene with someone who’s being hurt, you just want to laugh.”
The “Punch Drunk Love” star also noted that he appreciated being allowed to perform “punch drunk love” songs during the show, which is a popular song with fans of the show who also sang along to the show in support of the actor.
“If we had to do it again, we’d do it a little more often, but I guess I’d have to think about it, but the show is fun,” McKampys added.
“We do a lot of punch drunk love songs, so that’s fun for us.”
“Punishing” will premiere on Oct. 17 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
